The Weight We Carry. When We're Avoiding Things

Once, and only once, I forgot Mother's Day.
Yep, totally forgot.
I got bogged down with work and life, and before I knew it, the day had come and gone. I felt ashamed and generally pretty awful. Thankfully, I've been forgiven now.
And that's exactly what business owners sometimes do with their bookkeeping.
We all fall behind in some aspects of our lives from time to time, but when things build up, it can become an issue. It's okay if you have fallen behind. There's no task too large that we can't fix as a team. You're not alone in this.
What's weighing on your mind that's stopping you from reaching your next level of awesome?
You're at the shop, or online, and you've ordered something for the business, but you've lost the receipt. That's not the end of the world. There are loads of things we can do to solve that one, so don't worry. There will be someone on the team who knows what to do.
Maybe you're scared of looking at your bank account? I can totally understand that, but avoiding it will never take the issue away. What if I could tell you that there's no reason to be frightened of looking at your bank account? The first step is simply looking at it together.
Asking a question, knowing there is no such thing as a stupid question. Like, "How do I improve my cash flow?" Who can help with that?
The answer is... I can.
And when I need to ask you a question, you can help me. I'll keep going on about this, but we're a team who help and support each other.
Did you get a letter or email from HMRC, or maybe Companies House? These can be the worst. You don't know if it'll be the best of times or the worst of times, so let's open it together.
Fancy that... having support in the bad times, or congratulations in the good times. Because there will always be a mix of both. Let's open the letter together and come up with a plan, so you know it's not hanging over your head all day and keeping you awake at night.
Have you stopped calling your bookkeeper because you think you'll get a telling-off? Nothing could be further from the truth. This is what a good bookkeeper does. They will always have your best interests at heart, without judgement.
When you have questions, no matter how big or small, you can always ask us. It's our job to find solutions for you, not bring you more problems.
Ever feel that the problem gets bigger and bigger every day, like a snowball rolling down a hill?
In all honesty, yes. Sometimes when we ignore a problem, it does get bigger and bigger. But a problem shared is a problem halved. I know I've had things rattling around in this head of mine before and managed to make a mountain out of a molehill. But when we share those worries, we can come up with a plan. (You can see I won't let the team aspect go, can't you?)
The fact is, by the time we've worried ourselves into grey hair – or no hair, in my case – for six months, we've just spent six months worrying about something that might have been solved in an afternoon.
So talk. Ask the questions. Interact with your local and wider team. Never forget: you're not alone in this.
The hardest conversation is usually the one you haven't had yet. Once we've had it, we can make a plan.
You don't need every receipt.
You don't need every answer.
You don't even need everything organised.
You just need to start the conversation.
We'll work out the rest together.
If you'd like to have that conversation, I'd love to help.
